cycling for the disabled
cycling for the disabled
People with disability are even more deprived of exercise than the rest of us. One of the best ways to address this is special needs cyling. Adapted cycles exist, for one two, or more people. Some use hands instead of feet and each machine can be built around a specific needs, for example, if you have only one working limb, a bicycle can be made for you. Common Wheel in Maryhill Glasgow has a project for building these machines. And the project is next to the canal towpath, a perfect venue for traffic free rides. British Waterways have for years kept the canal closed by barriers, but the new director is, as of 2006, opening his heart to disabled rights. Pretty soon these amazing bikes will be going along the canal, and subsequently into the town and joining critical mass. I HOPE.
